From last year the number of participants in the Vasaloppet China has increased 17 %. Totally 579 skiers from 23 nations are registered to start in the two distances, 284 participants in the 50 km and 295 will start the 25 km.

Strong international field

In Men 50 km category we find several really good long distance athletes with top-ranked Anders Moelmen Hoest and Stian Hoelgaard from Norway. Strong competition is coming from the two Swedes Bob Impola, who is very familiar with the track in Jingyuetan Park as he was the winner of Vasaloppet China in 2015 and Jens Eriksson, a former national champion over 50 km, and someone who has actually scored several top 10 placings in the Swedish Vasaloppet as well.

(Bob Impola from Sweden won the Vasaloppet China in 2015, hence he is a favourite also for this year's victory)

Moving over to the women long distance superstar Britta Johansson Norgren will take the start in Changchun. Johansson has achieved merit at the Olympic winter games in 2006, as well as scored several medals in world championships relay. Johansson Norgren will be up against the best female skier in Japan: Masako Ishida.Owner of many gold medals in Asian winter games, Ishida has left her mark on the world stage with top ten placings at the Olympics and in many world cup races. Amongthewomen there is also a very strong Chinese athlete, Li Hongxue from China national team. She has three victories in Vasaloppet China.

Perfect conditions for the 15th anniversary

The surroundings are covered with a thin layer of natural snow and give you the real winter feeling. As usual the whole ski track are done by artificial snow and the track team reports that the 25 km loop, means two loops for the main race of 50 km, are well prepared by the groomers. The whole track is available for test and training on January 3rd and the final track preparation will be done later tonight.
Most of the international participants already arrived and enjoy ski testing and track inspection at the moment.
The weather forecast for race day says -15 degrees Celsius in the early morning and increasing up to -7 degrees Celsius as the sun rises. It seems to be a very sunny and nice day for the participants and spectators. The start will be at 11am and live broadcasted also outside China for the first time.
As usual, the ski arena has a marvelous setting with a lot of incredible snow sculptures, probably one of the biggest snow sculpture parks in the world.
