The mood at the Canadian Worldloppet races was most definitely festive as today’s Gatineau Loppet skiers hit the trails of Gatineau Park last weekend Saturday & Sunday. More than 1,200 of them gathered at the start line on day one, the classic style day, bolstered by excellent conditions and ideal temperatures.

The first two competitions of the 40th edition of Gatienau Loppet were the 51 km & 27 km classic style. The long race was won by the Norwegian marathon skier from Lillehammer, Petter Soleg Skinstad (2:26:57), two seconds before the Canadian Andy Shields. 3rd place was taken by the winner's brother, Maarten Solen Skinstad.

The women's race was dominated by the Czech Kamila Borutova (2:54:00), who arrived the finish 14 minutes before the 2nd placed Karen Messenger from Canada. The 3rd place goes to Switzerland, to Lena Pichard.

Sunshine for second race day

Day two of the Gatineau Loppet competitions also started under brilliant sunshine at Ecole secondaire Mont-Bleu, the start area. All participants, from expert to beginner, were eager to hit the trails of Gatineau Park for the freestyle and snowshoe races. This year, for the very first time, the 51 km freestyle, which started from P17 in the La Peche municipality, was a linear race.
Also on the second day, just like at the classic race, the winner was Petter Soleg Skinstad (2:12:56) from Norway. And again it was quite close: Only two seconds seperarte him and the second placed Dominique Moncion-Groulx, a local skier from Gatineau. Andy Shields also jumped on the podium for the second time this weekend and took the 3rd place.
In the ladie's long race we saw a Canadian podium. Zina Kocher won in 2:19:03 before Jenn Jackson, who came in 47 seconds later. The 3rd place goes to Veronique Fortin from Gatineau. All three are Canadians.

In addition, more than 150 children, accompanied by their parents, took part in the Mini Sport Echange Outaouais, a non-timed race with entertainment, music, hot chocolate, marshmallow roasting etc.

In total 2364 skiers from 20 countries were part of the 40th Gatineau Loppet. President of the Gatineau Loppet Claude Laramee was all smiles at the closing event. "That was a perfect weekend for the Gatineau Loppet. Everything from the temperature to the snow conditions, the number of participants, the new linear trail, the school day… well absolutely everything worked for this anniversary edition."
