February 13, 2005 Great Hotel We stayed at the Gasthof Zur Rose in Oberammergau in 2001. We will again be staying there again in 2 weeks before we ski the Engadin. Ludwig Frank is a wonderful host. The rooms are very nice and the food is outstanding. They are most accomodating to the skiers. The cost of the room this year is 58E per night with breakfast. The e-mail is: gasthof-rose@t-online.de

January 31, 2005 FEEDBACK FROM DOLOMITENLAUF 2005 Feedback from a very enthused participant of the 31st Dolomitenlauf who really knows all the the races of the Worldloppet!
Dear friends of the Dolomitenlauf!
I feel bound to congratulate and to say thank you to the whole team and countless assistants for this Super -Event.
For us,with starting-numbers from 84-86 my son (pharmacist),a colleague of mine and I(dipl.Druggists), a manifestation where everybody can feel that it was organized with heart.
Starting with getting our starting-numbers and ending with the catering at the end of the race.
Concerning the race:
At the start no stress Also very nice the short words of the priest, nice words for us to manage the race.
The whole track was exellently prepared.Very friendly and helpful people on the track and in the arrival area.
Exellent speaker who even informed me that my son arrived 1/2 hour ago.
And of course a sensational arriving area in the middle of the wonderful city of Lienz.
In the evening we were able to check our results via internet in our Hotel Traube.
And after our arrival at home-our fotos already in the internet.
I was participant of a lot of races.I`m World Loppet Master (Nr:301)and I will hopefully partipate for the 29th time on the Engadiner Skimarathon.
We will always rember the Dolomitenlauf 2005.
Again thank you very much for your wonderful work and best wishes

January 23, 2005 Dolomitenlauf not worth being WL Race? With less than 900 partecipants finished today, I am realy concerned about this race. I think its the result of some mismanagement of the last years. Why should I travell to Lienz when I can have much bigger, better organized races like the czech one? The organizers should think about how they do their job. Ohterwise they will loose even more skiers.

December 02, 2004 Sapporo Hello,
I'm thinking of doing the Sapporo Ski Marathon next year, since I happen to be in Japan at that time. But the first thing that strikes me is - is it possible to rent xc skiing equipment in Sapporo? I'm quite tall, is that a problem? Or, should I bring my own equipment (which to me seems complicated). I'm not elite, I'm just skiing for fun and exercise...Thanks for any input!

November 04, 2004 Sapporo Int. Ski Marathon On the worldloppet homepage www.worldloppet.com under 'weather' and 'Sapporo Int. Ski Marathon' there still is the Invitation for 2004. The Japanese organizers are not willing - or able - to present an invitation 4 months before the event -like last year too.
I think there should be a strict rule from the Worldloppet organization (among other missing rules) that every organizer of a worldloppet race must have an invitation on the worldloppet homapage at least 6 months before the race.

September 20, 2004 Global Warming Hi,
I am a senior in college and a cross country skier. I am currently working on my senior paper investigating the relationship between global warming and cross country skiing as well as any action taken by skiers in response to a perceived threat. I have found lots of information on the efforts of downhill ski resorts such as the Keep Winter Cool program but have found little relating directly to cross country skiing. I am interested in any cross country ski organizations that have addressed this issue or articles relating cross country skiing and global warming. A few years ago I heard of an organization in Wisconsin starting called "Skiers for Global Cooling". Does it still exist? What did it do? Any information or ideas of places to look for information would be great. Thank you!

May 16, 2004 The Fossavatn ski race in Iceland This race takes place on the first Saturday in May, in 2004 it was 05/01. The place is Isafjördur in the NW corner of Iceland, near the Arctic Circle. This year was the 55th edition – note that the race has never been cancelled for lack of snow. For the first time a 50 km race was added on top of the old 7/10/20 km distances (all classical). Snow was scarce and the race was shifted to a higher zone around altitude 500m. The track was attractive offering views on Isafjördur in its fjord. Usually the race is a klister race. This time the weather conditions (wind and snowfall around zero C) made it challenging. Seven foreigners participated in the 50 k or the 20 k event: 1 FRA, 1 GER, 1 ITA, 4 USA. We found the organization very user-friendly. I can recommend the race to skiers who wish to extend their ski season and/or experience something quite different. You can also combine the race with touring. If your time is limited, you can rent a car in Reykjavik and see the most famous Icelandic attractions (Geysir, Thingvellir, the Blue Lagoon) in 3-4 days.

April 26, 2004 IAWLS A few words following Gary's message. You can read info on IAWLS by clicking on IAWLS on the WL web site. We have actually 5 Committee members, they are volunteers who spend a lot of time for the association. Each of them represents not only their country but the totality of our members. Communication with skiers from English speaking countries is easy. It is more difficult with some European countries because of so many languages. For this reason we have two European members in the Committee and we can communicate in a total of 8 languages. Furthermore, we have main correspondents in the Czech Republic and in Russia who help us if language problems arise.
IAWLS has now more than 200 members from 22 countries, including both experienced WL skiers and newcomers. Thus, IAWLS is a representative cross-section of the WL skiers' community as a whole. In the message to the Open Forum preceding Gary's message, Hervé Courtine gave the total support of the French WL Masters' Association.
There are still many skiers who don't know what IAWLS is. (An anecdote: we met during the Vasaloppet week a Swedish skier who ignored the existence of Worldloppet, of course we informed him!). We welcome new members. By sending an email to IAWLS@worldloppet.com you can become a member (there is no membership fee!), receive information from the Committee and give your experiences at different WL races as well as your suggestions on future IAWLS actions.
Until now the IAWLS Committee has operated without money. Funding problems will arise later and we will then look at different sources. Our goals do not include poking our nose in the budget of WL races. We know that several races have a tight budget. By our action we make WL more popular amongst skiers and thus we also promote the WL races. And as Madis Lepajoe said: the Masters are the Ambassadors of WL.
Hannes Larsson, IAWLS Committee Chairman, Master no: 10-fold WL France hannes.larsson@wanadoo.fr
April 17, 2004 IWALS Representation It would seem that Worldloppet skiers would best be represented by IWALS if the committee was composed of skiers from many nations. Some very active ski nations have no represetation.
Also, perhaps a portion of a racer's entry could be offered as a voluntary donation to IWALS. This could ensure the ability of members to travel to meetings. Thus IWALS could become even a stronger skier advisory/advocay board to Worldloppet.
Is it appropriate for IWALS to monitor the books and financial situation of race organizations?
Perhaps it is. Without the racers the races wouldn't exist. And of course the opposite is also true.
Best wishes for continued success.

April 14, 2004 Worldloppet 2003 2004 I am agree with a good many runners as Michel Picot from Switzerland, Loïs Nagl from Austria, Jp Beaucher from France, Jane Fraser from UK, and many members and masters to alarmthe leaders and the organizers on the fact of tue deterioration of the quality of the organization for certain races; bad tracks for the classical technique, poverty and sometimes absence of reward to the arrival; defectof chronoloy in the programation of races( for exemple: the transjurassienne will have to follow the könig for facility displacement!), lack of correct starting line for the foreign runners members or masters, notably as the vasaloppet, it is abnormal that a runner is eliminated by time control because of the attribution of a bad startline ( for the vasa it is necessary to anticipate 1h30 to 2h of traffic jam for the ten first kilometers when one leaves in the last lines!)it is necessary absolutly that the direction of the vasa takes into account this problem by adopting, for exemple, the departure in spaced lines, as that is applied for main races.
It is necessary that these questions are treated at the time of the next congress to preserve the spirit of worldloppet. All the remarks made by the masters want to be constructives.
In the name of french masters, thank you M Madis Lepajoe for the excellent work and the quality of contacts during its prsidency.
Thank you with the organizers of the various races and we count on your ambition for tending towards the perfection.
The friendly on of french masters association is in total agreement with the proposals of the IAWLS and think it is necessary to benefit from this working tool.

March 28, 2004 Poor tracks at the Vasaloppet Like Eric for the Birkebeiner rennet, I would like to say that the tracks at the Vasaloppet, especially after Evertsberg were a complete mess ! Maybe it is due to the snow conditions and the warming temperature, but still, efficient grooming machines ( not the old and slow thing I have seen) should have been used during the race to fix that problem. For the first time in 14 Vasalopps, I have seen many people skating because of non existent tracks.
Skiers who have paid a lot and "dream" of the Vasaloppet expect better tracks.
JP Beaucher, Master no: 593 France beaucherjp@wanadoo.fr
March 25, 2004 Birkebeinerennet Would the organisers of the Birkebeiner like to comment on the state of the tracks and whether any action on their part would have helped? Tracks were pretty much non-existent in the first half of the race, as far as most 'ordinary' participants were concerned. Yes, it was snowy, and no doubt there are technical difficulties. But the lack of tracks, along with the very difficult waxing conditions, must have contributed to the high drop-out rate that occurred in this race. Also, by the time many people got to the second wax station, really needing the help of the professional waxers, it had been abandoned - due to running out of wax, we were told! Access to solvent to clean off klister and solve balling-up problems would have made a lot of difference to many people at that early point. On the plus side, many thanks to the people manning the feed stations, who were unfailingly friendly and helpful even with very bad weather conditions! And to the spectators offering help to scrape off our skis!
Jane Fraser UK janefraser1@btinternet.com
March 24, 2004 Birkebeiner Rennet 2004 I can tell you that after Dolomitenlauf 2004 and Finlandia Hiihto 2004 poorly prepared, Birkebeiner Rennet 2004 was not prepared at all ! I think it was only prepared for the top racers of FIS Marathon Cup. The Worldloppet Racers are just required to pay very expensive start-money and then shut up. The organisation in the start-area and on the track were very bad. After a top race on 2002, I will not come back to Birkebeiner Rennet in the next years but race in other places.
So I see that Worldloppet races are falling in their standards and that Worldloppet is no more a Quality-Garanty as it was before.
Zehtner Eric Switzerland eric.zehtner@net2000.ch
February 27, 2004 Dolomitenlauf and Finlandia Hiihto 2004 As Austrian – having done 17 Dolomitenläufe – I can just fully agree with Michel from Switzerland and Hans from Germany. The Dolomitenlauf track on Sunday was prepared very poorly. After 30 years of Dolomitenlauf they should know how to prepare tracks properly – not just for the top runners - bur for all of us. Besides the poorly prepared tracks there were several other severe problems.
On the other hand the tracks of Finlandia Hiihto (I have done 13 Finlandia Hiihtos) were not prepared better ! Both organizers should be ashamed !
I think the Worldloppet organization is obliged to have a look on the preparation of Worldloppet race tracks !
Lois Nagl Austria lois.nagl@bwt.at
February 13, 2004 Dolomit Lauf in Lienz I fully agree with Hans's statement: the organization was not at a level expected for a worldloppet race. The unknown length of the race, 42 km was announced in the start area, was certainly an issue. The preparation of the track was very bad. A lot of skiers were very disappointed in the finish area.
A good thing was sure the lunch for everybody in the big room.
My proposal for the future: the race should happen at the limit of Austria and Italia in Dobiacco. Here it is possible to prepare a very good track which will be less difficult than in Obertilliach.
With such an organization, it is not a surprise that less ans less skiers select this race.

January 19, 2004 Dolomitenlauf I have talked to many participants of the Dolomitenlauf and the feedback was horrible and meets
also my opinion, so I want to inform the Worldloppen Family about the catastrophal organisation in Lienz.
First of all there were many things promised to the Worldloppet-Passport holders. There was promised a great welcome party for the worldloppet members. At the annouced place for that nobody wanted to know something about this event. I also didnt get the place in the second wave, which was also promised to the WL-Passport passport holders.
But there were many other things which didnt only concern WL skiers. For example it was not clear till the start how long the distances of the races were. 65, 50, 42? And there is no statement so far, how long the track really was. The track itselfe was not prepared very good. I think it is very important for a sportsman to know were the refreshment (and how many are organized) areas are. More than the half of the annouced refreshment areas were missing.
In the finish I was really suprised that the price ceremony has allready been at one o clock when I was standing at the main place at 6 o clock, which was the annouced time for the ceremony.
Till now I had no Internet so I wasnt able to check my results, because the inofficial results were incomplete and partly wrong. Also the age categories were missing. Some of my colleauges were even missing in the results.
There are so many great organized events in the worldloppet calender, which are worth travelling to them. Many things have to be improved in Lienz that I will participate again.
It would be great to hear also other oppinions to confirm my view.
See You at the Marcialonga!

August 16, 2003 Links again Hi and thanks for mentioning the Sesilåmi race. For next year I'm planning on using the Grenaderen (90km classic race close to Oslo) as a warmup for the Vasaloppet two weeks later.

August 09, 2003 Links, tips JP's idea of links is good. Another ingredient is good tips. Here I give some interesting places although the WL races never get boring.
The Merino Muster ski race in New Zealand takes place one week before Kangaroohoppet, 7/21/42 km. See www.snowfarmnz.com.
The Fossavatn ski race in Iceland takes place the 1st WE in May. In 2004 they will add a new 50 km race on top of the 7/10/20 km races. See www.fossavatn.com.
In Norway there is, e.g. the 53 km Sesilami race the 1st WE of April. See www.sesilami.no

August 09, 2003 More tips JP mentioned the Canadian Ski Marathon the WE before Keskinada, very challenging (2 x 80 km), see www.csm-mcs.com.
After Finlandiahiihto you can stay in Finland for some unforgettable experiences.
Pirkan Hiihto (45/90km), 50 th the 1st WE in March 2004, as long as Vasaloppet but not as easy. (VL's claims that it is the longest and oldest are erroneous, other skiers may show some 100 km races). See www.pirkankierros.hlu.fi/skirace.htm.
Oulun Tervahiihto, the oldest in the world, started 1889, 115 th in 2004, 20/40/70 km. Email tervahiihto@oulunhiihtoseura.fi.
The Lapponia Week on Lapland's spring snow, 27 March-2 April 2004, Mon 60 km, Wed 50 km, Fri 80 km.See www.muonio.fi/ski/lapponia/week.htm.
Rajalta Rajalle (from Border to Border), a 440 km accompanied ski tour across Finland from the Russian border to the Swedish border. Excellent for meeting people. See www.laplandfestivals.com

August 07, 2003 Links Why not add a list of links to this site, including the Euroloppet organization, as well as the American Ski Marathon Series, or other races like the Canadian Ski Marathon. The idea is to "ski around the world", and broaden our horizon, seeing new countries and making new friends. An alternative to "skiing the worldloppet races" over and over, which seems to be a growing tendancy.

October 01, 2002 The 24th Transjurassienne 2003 Dear Friends,
I have read the Forum letter sent by Mr. Beaucher on Sept. 20th and perhaps I can provide some helpful information.
We are in agreement that it is not the 24 edition of La Transjurassienne because of the cancelations that took place in 1979, 1990, 1993 and 2001.
We celebrate and advertise the the birth of our event because even thought these 4 editions were canceled, they were indeed organised, and as much work went into the organisation of these canceled events as went into the ones that took place.
It is a very direct action that was taked by the Board of Directors of La Transjurassienne to celebrate the birth of our event and not the number of races held.
Sincere and warm regards to all ski friends,
Trans'Organisation

September 30, 2002 21 th Transjurassienne in 2003 On the Transjurassienne website, it is said that in 2003, it will be the 24 th !... Wrong ! You can count and recount, it will be the 21 st. I have completed 16, and missed only 4 : the first 3, and then in 92. I know what I am talking about !... Let me tell you what happened : In 1999 was celebrated the 20 th anniversary of the creation of the race. Actually, the 1979 edition had to be cancelled. Then began the confusion : in 2001, it became the 21 th Transju... and so on !
The truth is that "real" number 20 took place last february.
Well, it might not really matter, except to people - like me - who like to do this race over and over - and have the weird feeling of having "missed" 3 virtual Transjus. Please, Transju organizers, put your clocks right on time !
Hi to all my ski buddies from all over the world. Hope to see you in Mora or Lamoura next winter.

April 20, 2002 WL Master races from 10 to 14 Dear WL Organization :
Since several years, I am hearing from "hunderts" of skiers, that number of races to obtain WL Master shoud be incresed from present 10 to at least 12 or better to 14.
For past 20 years, you have admited four new WL member countries, but number of races needed for WL Master remained the very same : 10 .
Can you at Lahti meeting discuss this subject and increase number of needed races from present 10 to 14 ?
Sincerely,
Uli Lynnen

April 19, 2002 Jan Dear Secretary General,
In Doha (Qatar) I had a chance to meet an extraordinary man. I guess you know him. His name is Jan Jasiewicz, at least 9 times WL Master according to your in information (perhaps even now a day 10 times he accomplished this achievement).
He participated in Olympic Games and two World Ski Championships (not in cross country disciplines). "It's only history" as he says. Now a day he is racing for pleasure participating in WL cross country races. I'm not a skier and I know very little about this kind of sport but I had with him very interesting chat under Doha's sun (35 Centigrade). Imagine that Qatar is his 123 country visited all over our globe. His stories are captivating - we have to finish our (but mostly his "report") late in the night.
Additionally he is mountain climber (4 times he tried to get at Everest by, as he told, "no chance was on his side". He prepared the breakfast at the slopes of Mc Kinley (Alaska) when temperature was reaching -45 Centigrade. 5 days take him to find hospital after accident at The Gasherbrun II slopes (summit in Pakistan higher than 8000 m). And so on. the time was to short.
I guess that similar personage is difficult to find and I suggest that you mention him in your publication.
Be successful in the scope of Worldloppet organization very warmly described by Jan.
Best regards
Tom Johnson

April 01, 2002 Fossavatn Ski Race in Iceland Hi fellow WL skiers !
As the spring gets closer and closer, many skiers are wondering how to get the most out of the last few weeks of the season. I hope I'm not being rude if I use this forum to point out the Fossavatn Ski Race in Isafjordur, Iceland. The race takes place on May 4th and it's 21 km in classical style (7 and 10 km as well). This is a small race, compared to the WL races, but it offers a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, a beautiful scenery and a great way to end the season. If you think this might be something for you, drop me a line and I'll give you some further information.
Best regards

March 20, 2002 Birkebeinerrennet hints Hi,
From a non-european viewpoint, maybe the following hints for the Birkebeiner might be helpful. No one seems able to predict the weather in this crazy pattern shifting we seem to be suffering - look at how many races have been cancelled/shortened the past few seasons. It was 18 degrees celsius the other day when we left Geneva after the Engadin. For the Norweigan race I can only suggest you wax on race start advice (from the numerous Swix, Start or Toko spielers) as the first long climb is not pleasant with slip. The race is so well organised, age group start wise, that you can ski fairly freely. At least the snow at the start end seems consistent and the recommended (usually warm)stick will get you to the top. This may however have you balling up at the higher altitude parts of the course so take a plastic klister scraper to lessen the wax thickness at the top. 3 minutes doing a quick scrape at the side of the track will be well made up on the great flat and the downhills. My best advice however is, no matter what the wax conditions, take a tube of silver or even chola klister for the last 7 km or so. So many times this is melting or icy and in the crowd, Northers europeans and Scandinavians, who understandably don't seem to have a grasp of klister skiing, really struggle. Again, a little application time is well made up.
All this advice is based on the current cold AM warm PM patterns and will be useless if you have good consistent fresh snow and remaining below 0 degrees all day. The silver klister advice though, is worth it no matter what!!
PS take a good windproof jacket in your rucksack and have a friendly chat with the refreshment station people, they are all wonderful.

February 27, 2002 Norwegian Birkebeiner weather 2002 will be my first Norwegain Birkebeiner. Am concerned with differences in elevation, weather, snow types and therefore variable waxing conditions. Any comments from past participants? What is a good source for weather information & track conditions both down below & at the high points on the course.
Thank you.

January 26, 2002 Standardize Course Profile? My suggestion is to establish a standard means of developing course profiles. Some races have profile maps that do not adequately describe the terrain.
While I would benefit from this kind of standard I hope that each race continues to publish their own brochures and tha the culture of each race remains more or less intact.

January 22, 2002 Skiing in France before the Trans' Hi Warren & Deborah
A great place to ski before the Trans' would be at La Feclaz which is about 30 minutes drive out of Chambery in the Savoie. The snow is some of the most reliable in France and it has a very good network of trails. The British XC Championships are held there every year and the French held their masters championship races their in 2001 when the snow conditions all over France packed it in.
E-mail me if you need any more info as I am in the process of moving hemispheres.

January 15, 2002 snow report on the web I recommend http://wetter.rtl.de/index_ok.html.
It is in German but easy to understand for a skier. It reports snow depth on downhill slopes ( Schigebiete ) and in valleys ( Tal ) which refers mainly to X-country skiing.

January 06, 2002 Sandy's request Sandy,
Couldn't recommend a better and more accurate site for your weather than:
http://www.snow-forecast.com/wafs/alps.html
As for XC skiing, if you could detour to the area of Ruhpolding and Reit-im-Winkl (30 km to the West of Salzburg and just South off the Autobahn), we have found nice tracks and good fair priced accommodation there.
Skiing on the World Cup Biathlon circuit trails at Ruhpolding is
fantastic and I believe Reit-im-Winkl was the site of World Cup XC skiing in the past as there are good trails. The trails also wander all the way between the two places near to the road - at least 30 km+ worth.
Good Skiing

January 05, 2002 Skiing in Austria Do you have any advice on ski areas in Austria other than the Tirol, or the Czech republic or Slovakia? We are travelling to Vienna soon and looking for xc skiing between Vienna and the Ramsau, as well as an update on weather conditions in that area. Any recommendations for accommodation (2 adults) would also be welcome.

December 14, 2001 Medal Ceremony for Master Completors It might be nice to have Master completors who make that achievement at the race of the current Secretary General to be awarded the medal by the Secretarty General.
Perhaps all the confirmations of the nine earlier races could take place prior to the tenth
race.

December 14, 2001 Masters presentation re: Gary's suggestion.
It may be difficult to organize globally as most of races do not have a closing ceremony. If the race is on Sunday then most of the people hurry back home.
In Australia we have Kangaroo Hoppet on Saturday and then we have a very nice Closing Ceremony which includes presentation of new Worldloppet Masters.
Come to Australia - we will celebrate with you

November 27, 2001 Worldloppet Clothing There are probably now sufficient 'masters'in Australia to possibly justify the cost of printing of an Australian Worldloppet Masters logo on a shirt, vest, jacket, etc. This is not to say the "Official" clothing is not very suitable and I proudly wear mine 'down under' both winter and summer.
Before I investigate doing this locally however, has such a thing been done before in other countries? Who owns the rights to the 'logo' as such, and would there be a problem in using it with some suitable Australian words so that Aussie Masters could advertise themselves and the Worldloppet race circuit here. Of course, a different logo could be used but it would be nice to use the official one. Needless to say, there would be extremely limited production, no advertising in competition with the official provider and no real 'sales' - only provision to Aussie 'Masters' at the local production cost of the garments.
AND-let's see more masters using this forum !! It's a great idea

November 20, 2001 General Our sincere congratulations to all those responsible for making the changes to the World loppet annual book and setting up the great new web site (but I still can't download an Engadin reservation - maybe a bad link). My wife Debbie and I are braving the air journey from Australia again next year (2002) to do the Transjurassienne and the Engadin. We will then be two races short of our second WL medals. We would appreciate information on a suitable place to XC Ski and train in France for a week or so before the Trans J but not in the Haute Jura area - any helpers please. We will have a car available. We love the cameraderie of the WL races and always look forward to meeting new friends. Just look for two krazy aussies on the piste skating like kangaroos.

September 29, 2001 WL Master Medailon Can you, after awarding WL Master Medailon engrave, istead of simple sticking number on back of Medailon? Engrave on back following data: Name, Medailon Number and years , on which WL Master was achieved? Engraving on BACK OF MEDAILON IS LONG LASTING, STICKER IS WEARING OUT AND LOOKS SLOPPY. You must have in Tartu local engraving store to do it! Thank you for your consideration to improve final look on hard earned WL Master with paid Meadilon. With hope, that my second Medailon will have already engraved data on back of Medailon, istead that golden sticker, which after several months is damadged and number is disapearing. Engraving datas on back of Medailon will not bring so high additional cost for Medailon award to new WL Master and will look very profesionally.
