Dolomitenlauf arriving in Lienz: back to the roots for the 50th anniversary

This is a week of news for Worldloppet, its projects and its members and the next big news is coming straight from the Austrian race, the Dolomitenlauf that will celebrate this year its 50th anniversary and has plenty of surprises.

A short look to the past…

The Dolomitenlauf is not only the most important people’s cross-country skiing in Austria but has also contributed to cross-country skiing history worldwide being one of the first members of Worldloppet and the first race to take place after the foundation of this global association in 1978, in Uppsala / SWE. Today, the most important popular cross-country races of 20 nations are part of the Worldloppet association, with more than 130,000 cross-country skiers from all over the world taking part in it every year. The Dolomitenlauf made noise 1980 thanks to an innovative event: the “Dolomitesprint”, cross-country ski race that took place in the main square in Lienz and since then very appreciated part of the side events program that attracts lots of enthusiastic spectators.

Events to celebrate the anniversary

In the anniversary year, the Organizing Committee wants to prepare something very special:

After a few years, the main classical run is running the track back to the main square of Lienz, where participants will cross the finish line, this year on Sunday instead of Saturday. By doing this, the Organization wants to offer participants from all over the world a special cross-country experience. On the other side, the 42/20km Free Technique race will still be held on Saturday in Obertilliach, the place where the past 10 events took place and that could guarantee that no race was canceled due to lack of snow.
50 Years of the Dolomitenlauf will also be the perfect occasion for a special exhibition in the Spitalskirche, the Church in Lienz and also for a documentary about the history of the main Austrian race, which will be on display for free in the cinema “Cine X”.

All in all, lots of news and events, all waiting for you for an amazing weekend in Austria!
