PERFECT SKI CONDITIONS FOR THE 42nd GATINEAU LOPPET

Gatineau, February 13, 2020 – The 42nd edition of Canada’s largest international cross-country skiing event, the Gatineau Loppet is set to take place under sunny skies and on perfect snow conditions this weekend. Close to 2,500 participants of all ages and levels, and from more than 20 countries, will take part in cross-country ski races ranging from 2 km to 50 km in the beautiful Gatineau Park on February 15 and 16.
A member of the Worldloppet League, the Gatineau Loppet is part of a circuit regrouping the 20 largest cross-country ski races around the world, including the Vasaloppet in Sweden and the Jizerskà 50 in the Czech Republic.

Weekend schedule
The XC Ski Show – with its many vendors and demonstrations – will kick-start the weekend beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, February 14 at the Cégep de l’Outaouais, Gabrielle-Roy campus – the main site for all activities and races over the weekend.
For this 42nd edition, the Gatineau Loppet is once again organizing races in three separate disciplines. The fat bike competitions, presented by Les Bicyclettes de Hull, took place on January 25th. Cross-country ski and snowshoeing races will take place during the official weekend of the event.

There’s still time to register!
While online registration closed on February 12th, it is possible to pick-up bibs and register on site throughout the weekend starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 14th, near the cafeteria of Cégep de l’Outaouais, Gabrielle-Roy campus. Registration will also be open as of 6:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the same location.

Triple Olympian Alex Harvey to join the festivities!
Alex Harvey, honourary chair of this 42nd edition, will be at the start lines of the races and will hand out the medals to winners at the Awards ceremonies.

He will also give a speech at the Saturday Worldloppet cocktail reception a the Cégep (5 p.m., open to media). Participants will have a chance to meet Alex at the Ski Show from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and between 1:30 and 2:30 pm Saturday, February 15 and from 10am to 11:30 am and between 1:15 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 16. 

Ski and weather conditions
With a 27 cm base at P8 and the National Capital Commission recommending all of the trails in the Gatineau Park, organizers are thrilled with the conditions.
The weather forecast also appears to be on skiers’ side with a sunny -10 degrees Celcius predicted for Saturday, and a high of -2 degrees Celcius and flurries on deck for Sunday.
Due to possible cold overnight temperatures Friday, participants are encouraged to check the Gatineau Loppet website to confirm actual Saturday start times.

About the Gatineau Loppet
The Gatineau Loppet will be held from February 15-16 through the wonderful and challenging trials of the Gatineau Park. An expected 2,500 participants will compete in a 2km,5km, 10Km and a 27km Skate, 27 Classic, 51 KM Skate and a 51 km Classic race. Participants will come from around the world, locally of course but also from all regions of Canada, United States, Europe and Australia.
The Gatineau Loppet is one of many stops on the WorldLoppet Tour, an organization that comprises of 20 long distances skiing events throughout the world. Canada, and Gatineau has hosted this event for 42 years.
The 2020 Gatineau Loppet is run by the PMI Sports, an expert in the organization of events. We can also count on the remarkable work of the Administration and Organizing Committee, whose members work passionately to make this event a national success.
