Merino Muster

Summer race trio concluded at tomorrow’s Merino Muster

Tomorrow, Saturday 31st August, the 3rd event of the summer race trio is standing on Worldloppet’s calendar. The Snow Farm in Wanaka/NZL is well prepared to host the 25th anniversary of Merino Muster. Good snow, good entry numbers, good track preparation and good weather, all good for Worldloppet Skimarathon season stage 3.

Worldloppet Master honouring at International Skier’s Evening

But before we start the big race day tomorrow, the international skiers who have travelled to New Zealand’s Wanaka from all parts of the world enjoyed a common dinner yesterday. The highlight of the Worldloppet evening was the presentation and honouring of the newest member of the Worldloppet Master‘s family, Gary Aston. Mike Turner, New Zealand’s double Master handed over the Diploma!

Jessie Diggins challenging her title

Tomorrow morning (this night in Europe) the 25th edition of New Zealand’s Worldloppet race is taking place with different distances to go: 42 km for the traditional Merino Muster (Worldloppet Gold race), 21 km for the Snow Rake (Worldloppet Silver race) and 7 km for the Straggle Muster. In addition, a 1 km kids race is taking place.

The favourite for this year’s title is US-skier Jessie Diggins, winner of the last three Merino Musters. She returned to challenge her title. The Chinese, Japanese and Korean National teams are planning to measure their performance alongside Jessie.  So the women’s race will definitely be exciting to follow.

Weather and track conditions are promising

The weather for Saturday is for a clear clam and sunny day. Colder mornings temperatures ensure the snow is in dry pristine winter condition ready for the Merino Muster. Geoff, the groomer has prepared the course ready for competitors to ski the trails today, as great practice day before race day tomorrow.

There will be a traditional New Zealand Maori welcome prior to the start for all competitors. And an after-party following the race will be held in the township of Wanaka. You will find the results here:
