Fossavatn Ski Marathon

Worldloppet-Weather: Time To Say Goodby

Wordloppet is starting its last race for 2015/16 and winter is racing against spring for the last time in this season. But both races will come to an end soon. Spring is trying to reach big parts of Europe and will make it in May.

At the moment we don’t really know what to say. An area with low depression and icy polar air over West and Middle Europe caused the comeback of winter in the Alps, anywhere else from France to Poland there were thunderstorms with soft hail. Even in parts of Croatia, there was some snow at the beginning of the week. But in the Mediterrenean area, however, sun is dominating the sky and the air is quite warm with about 20 degrees or so. Although this last week-end in April will also be fresh and changeable, in May temperatures will rise up a bit to about 15 or 20 degrees even in the North and Middle of Europe and sun will come back stronger. So we’re looking forward to spring coming back, which is a real strong hope for many of us after this strong comeback of winter. But spring, we’ll make it. All we need is just a little patience, Guns N‘ Roses would sing.

Not so much patience is needed for the last Worldloppet race for this season. Fossavatn Ski Marathon held in Ísafjörður, northwestern Iceland and part of Worldloppet since 2014. Weather shouldn’t make any problems, although it will be quite changeable. Sunny phases will mix up with a lot of clouds and also a few slight showers with snow or rain, but on the whole it should be a dry day with temperatures going up from 0 degrees in the morning to about 5 degrees in the afternoon. What is important, if you arrive earlier or stay a bit later: Please take care of the wind. On Friday and on Sunday it will be quite windy with gusts between 60 and 80 kilometres per hour, on Saturday there won’t be so much wind which is the reason why I said there shouldn’t be any problem with the weather.

So have fun and enjoy the race or whatever you do else at the week-end. For me it’s time to say goodbye – but not forever, just for a few months, till winter is coming back again (hopefully he will – but now we saw that he can) and a new season of Worldloppet races is going to start. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope you do the same. I wish you a nice summer – hope it will be nice with not too much thunderstorms. But now just look forward to spring in May! Have a nice time and take care – read you soon!
