Birkebeiner Rennet

Birkebeinerrennet: The Race Among the Races Starts Tomorrow

Marcialonga, Vasaloppet, Engadin Skimarathon 2016, the biggest skimarathons and Worldloppet-races are history for this season, only one missing: The Birkebeinerrennet finishing in Norway’s Olympic town from 1994, Lillehammer. But of course every skier knows where the legendary ski marathon takes place, held in memorial of Torstein Skjevla and Skjervald Skurkka, two Birkebeiners who carried king son  Hakon Hakonsen in 1206 across the mountains to save him from Baglerne. This story is the reason why the 20.000 skiers in total have to carry a 3,5 kg backpack including contributes to the racer’s safety.

Tomorrow, 19th of March, at 7:30 the skiers are going to start in Rena, first a very strong elite group and then the thousands of popular skiers. Besides last year’s winner from Norway, Petter Eliassen and a bunch of great long distance skiers like John Kristian Dhal (Vasaloppet winner 2016), Justyna Kowalczyk and Britta Johansson Norgren, top-skiers of the FIS Worldcup like the overall winner Martin Johnsrud Sundby, Sjur Roethe, Pal Golberg and Astrid Uhrenhold Jakobsen are going to fight for the victory in the 78th edition of the Birkebeinerrennet.

Not for the victory fighting but still very important for the event will not only be the rest of the thousands of skiers coming from all parts of the world, but also the Crown Prince Haakon Magnus

The race will be shown on the norwegian TV and we are going to inform you on the Worldloppet-Facebookpage and on our Website. So stay tuned!
