Worldloppet-Weather: Nice Late Winter Weather

Worldloppet Weather Expert, Niklas Sieger, from Siegerwetter, about this weekend’s weather situation:

In the West of Europa, the Azores High intensified itself, the same did an area of high pressure in Russia.  In between, the small depression Doris travels across the English Channel to the south and brings heavy rain from the North Sea to Central Spain. In Central Europe, it remains quite friendly meanwhile. Around Italy and on the North African Mediterranean coast, however, it stays changeable with showers.

So, there’s this question why there is no spring in the most parts of Europe? You will laugh maybe, but in fact, this question is easier to answer than how the weather’s going to be next week. Due to the high pressure area over Russia, some masses of cold air may make their way to the Eastern and maybe also to the Central parts of Europe at the week-end or next week and this makes a detailled forecast very difficult. The only thing we can say for sure is there will be no summer next week. No, seriously: In the week-end it remains friendy in Central Europe, then it will get changeable again, but high precipitations are not in sight.

So what about the Worldloppet races this weekend? Let us look at them in detail. On Saturday there will be the Demino Ski Marathon, the most popular ski race in Russia, with around 1500 participants last year. The weather on raceday will be ok. Not perfect, but ok. It will stay cloudy most of the time, but there should be no precipitation and a bit of sun is also possible, especially in the afternoon. However, to say it in one sentence: On the whole it will be a cloudy, but dry day with temperatures around 2 degrees in the afternoon.

And for the Engadin Skimarathon the forecast is even better: 12.000 participants each year and this year it may be even more, because it will be quite a sunny day in St. Moritz on Sunday. Just a few clouds cover the sky and it should stay dry throughout the day with temperatures around -2 degrees in the afternoon. Just one thing is important: If you are already there in the morning, please don’t forget your winter jacket, because it can get really cold in the morning.

Anyways, the races will be more exciting than the weather – for sure! So enjoy sun at the week-end, hopefully you can. Winter greets and I do the same – have fun, wherever you are and whatever you do.
