12.000 skiers in Switzerland’s Engadin
For our preview-series this week we travel to Switzerland, to the beautiful Engadin. There we take a closer look onto the third biggest ski marathon in the world, the Engadin Skimarathon.
For almost half a century the Engadin Skimarathon has been firmly anchored in the event agenda of the Engadin on the second Sunday in March. The largest cross-country-skiing event in Switzerland and third largest worldwide will take place for the 48th time in March 2016. Again over 12’000 cross-country-skiing fans from over 50 nations will compete.
The 42 km course leads from Maloja over the lakes of the Upper Engadin through the Staz forest to Pontresina, continuing along the airport of Samedan and through picturesque Engadin villages to S-chanf. The mainly flat course includes only a few inclines and descents and is manageable for everyone. The main course is valid for the Worldloppet Gold-Master. Last year the Russian World Cup athlete Ilia Chernousov could win the Engadin Skimarathon while Faivre Picon Anoukin claimed the vicotry in the women’s ranking.
For the cross-country-skiing newcomers or the ambitious participants, the Half Marathon course (21 km) from Maloja to Pontresina is a good alternative to the long race-track. Moreover, the “Women’s race” will be held on the first Sunday in March for the 17th time. This race-track leads from Samedan to S-chanf and is 17 km long. Both of these races are valid for the Worldloppet Silver-Master.
