Finlandia Hiihto presents two new races
The Finlandia Hiihto Skimarathon counts as one of the biggest Worldloppet races and next February there will be even more races to choose from at Finlandia Ski Marathon. The largest finnish ski marathon taking place in Lahti and Hollola is expanding its program with the so called “Finlandia Sprint” and the “Finlandia Relay”.
The ski weekend kicks off already on Friday 26th of February when the new sprint takes place. The event will be run over 1,5 kilometer course, the sprint course which will be used at the World Championships in Lahti 2017. The event is for teams of four and gives an opportunity to get a taste of a worldclass sprint course. It also serves as nice warm-up for those racing longer on Saturday or Sunday.
Finlandia Relay takes place both on Saturday and Sunday. It is also for teams of four, where the team will share the traditional 50 km as follows: 9,3 km+17,1 km+11 km+12,6 km.
“The novelties make nice addition to traditional distances and individual events, and are equally suitable for new ski friends as well. They also give a nice opportunity for friends, colleagues and families to have a nice get-together day while enjoying sports”, says Finlandia Ski Marathon’s secretary general Tiina Hernesniemi.
Another welcomed news is related to starting area. Lahti Ski Stadium got a new wider bridge as a part of development work ahead of World Cahmpionships 2017. That gives Finlandia Ski Marathon possibility to have a larger starting area and avoid a steep uphill start.
“We strongly believe skiers are going to like this as there will be no rush during the first few hundred meters”, Hernesniemi says.
