Worldloppet

Tartu Maraton now also in free technique

Tartu Maraton celebrates its 50th anniversary next winter and comes with the renewed concept. We asked the Race Director Indrek Kelk how the 2024 race looks like and what does it mean for the Worldloppet skiers

What are the biggest changes?

Our wish was to make the program more compact and easy to join with family and friends (See a Vlog Episode about traveling with family to the Tartu Maraton). This is why we have brought all the distances into one weekend. We also wanted every skier to find a doable challenge – and for the first time the you can complete the Tartu Maraton in free technique too.

Saturday’s Tartu Maraton in free technique is just like the main marathon day with service stations and blueberry soup on the course, and a medal, hot soup and sauna at the finish. On Sunday the traditions will be kept. It is still in classic technique, still 63 and 31 km on the famous rolling landscape of South-Estonia and the beloved classical track.

What does it mean for Worldloppet skiers? Do they still get the stamps?

Yes, of course! Making any of the 31 km distances, regardless of technique, gives a silver stamp. 63 km race gives a gold stamp.

Are there any specialties for WL passport holders and masters?

Passport holders get the free waxing service and there is also the traditional masters reception held. In addition the WL desk is open at the race center and finish.

Is there a special jubilee event taking place?

To celebrate the birthday, Tartu Maraton Vintage welcomes everyone in fond of traditions to cover the race with old ski equipment. The 31 km retro distance is also eligible for the WL silver stamp.

50. Tartu Maraton takes place on February 17-18. Registration is open already.
