Engadin Skimarathon

+ Update + Norwegians dominate 54th Engadin Skimarathon

The weather forecast promised a tough day for the 13.000 skiers of Engadin Skimarathon today. Already over the past weeks snow was falling strongly in Engadin, which forced the organizers to move the start from Maloja to Silvaplana. Today again snow fall made the track slow and the vision bad. Circumstances the Norwegians could handle the best it turned out: All 3 podium places are going to Norway.

The a leading group of six skiers was formed after the first half of the 40 km alternative race course. Three Swiss skiers and three Norwegians. Among them Swiss hero Dario Cologna, who already won the Engadiner 4 times. With less than 4 km to go the Norwegian Magne Haga increased the speed, brought some meters between him and the others and continued his attempt and… brought it to the finish. With 8 seconds advantage he won the Engadin Skimarathon 2024. Second place goes to his compatriot Thomas Bucher-Johannessen and the third place, also to Norway, Filip Fjeld Andersen.

Fluro-disqualification taken back by FIS – Veyre wins Engadiner

In the ladies competition the fight for the podium places was pre-decided already after the first half of the race. At least we thought so. Three skiers formed the leading group: Flora Dolci (FRA), Giuliana Werro (SUI) and Mäele Veyre (FRA). With about one third to go, Dolci had to let go from the leaders. From that point on, it was a fight between France and Switzerland, between last year’s winner Werro and Veyre. A fight, which was won by the young French skier, who arrived the finish first. But after some minutes of victory she got disqualified due to use of fluoro-wax, which is banned at all Worldloppet races. So Giuliana Werro was awarded as winner of 2024’s Engadin Skimarathon. But the week after, the FIS has taken back the disqualification, as the prescribed procedure had not been adhered to in three of the twelve fluoro-disqualifications, upon which the FIS Office raised an objection to the three disqualifications deemed incorrect with the Appeals Commission. The Commission approved the appeal and annulled the disqualifications. The female athlete impacted by the verdict is Maëlle Veyre (FRA), who is now the official winner of the women’s Engadin Skimarathon. Second place goes to Switzerland, Giuliana Werro and third place to Italy, which Federica Sanfilippo and Carla Wohler finished third.
