Fossavatnsgangan prepares to celebrate 90th birthday
Fossavatnsgangan was first held in 1935, and has since been Iceland’s most prominent cross-country skiing competition. Next year, we will be celebrating its 90th birthday! As we approach this momentous milestone, the organizers invite you to be part of the festivities and join Fossavatnsgangan from April 9th to 12th, 2025.

Registration is now open
Registration for the 2025 races is now open, offering the opportunity to compete in the heart of Iceland’s stunning landscape and to join making history as we celebrate 90 years of Fossavatnsgangan. But it is not only recommended to secure a spot in the race as soon as possible, but also to book accommodation: Isafjordur is a small village and beds are limited. Here you find a map with available accommodation.

More news for 2025 are communicated by the organizers: “We are excited to share that the Fossavatnsgangan Night Race will now be held in the same week as the main event. This means overseas participants and locals from other parts of Iceland can experience the thrill of not one, not two, but three races in one trip.”, says Gylfi Ólafsson, Fossavatnsgangan’s spokesperson.
In the Video-Blog “Gunnar’s Nordic Adventures” you can see, what you could experience in the land of ice and fire and also how participation in Fossavantsgangan’s Night Race is looking like:
The 2024 Fossavatnsgangan was a resounding success, with participants from around the globe coming together to celebrate their love for skiing. If you want to relive the excitement, you can watch the race highlights on SC Play.
