Australian Cross-Country skiing winter knocking on our doors

Australia’s secrete is not a hidden beach or little-known surf spot. It is how good the cross-country skiing is, it is world class. Falls Creek Alpine Resort, home of the Kangaroo Hoppet, has 60+ km of groomed cross-country tracks taking one out from the village into the snowgum woodlands and open plains of the snow-covered Alpine National Park.

Imagine skiing through eucalyptus trees with colourful parrots flying past and coming across an old cattleman’s hut.  Or climbing above the tree line and feeling on top of the world, experiencing expansive views of the Great Dividing Range stretching all the way to Mount Kosciusko, the highest peak in Australia.

There are FIS Homologated race loops, and it is not unusual to see international skiers from around the world skiing the trails at Falls Creek. 2025 will be a lead up year to the Olympics, and it is expected cross-country national teams from around the globe may base themselves at Falls Creek for off season on-snow training, including racing in the Kangaroo Hoppet.

The moderate climate makes for some awesome snow conditions. It is not unusual for the weather to settle into a freeze-thaw cycle, which means blue skies and fast snow. If the weather is not cooperating, it is just a short trip down to the valley where the sun could be shining and the flowers blooming. The town at the base of the mountains is called ‘Mount Beauty’ for a reason.

There is plenty on offer in the local area: picturesque walking trails, mountain bike parks, golf courses (including a resident mob of kangaroos), breweries & wineries, cafes & coffee roasting.

Now is the time to plan a trip to the Southern hemisphere to experience Australia’s great skiing. With the Kangaroo Hoppet and New Zealand’s Merino Muster scheduled just a week apart it makes it easy to get two more stamps in the Worldloppet passport. Be sure to allow plenty of time for a trip to take advantage of all that is on offer in the Antipodes.
