Thomas Bing wins season ender Fossavatnsgangan in Iceland
The weather couldn’t be better for the 90th birthday of Fossavatnsgangan, which took place today in Isafjordur, Iceland. While the organizers had to put a lot of effort into the race course due to mild spring weather over the past days, today it froze over night and the morning hours. Right in time for today’s skimarathon, the sun came out and accompanied the whole race.

The German Thomas Bing is the big winner today. He finished in a time of 02:14:43. Next behind him was Swede Rickard Ericsson with a time of 02:19:51.4 and in third place was local Snorri Einarsson from Ísfjordur.
First in the women’s 50 km was Linda Rós Hannesdóttir from Ísfjordur in 03:26:44.3. Next was Edda Vésteinsdóttir in 03:44:20.3 and in third place was Beth Bernhardt from the United States in 03:46:25.7.

The weather could hardly have been better for the event, with clear skies, calm winds, and a temperature of around -3°C.
“We’re really happy with how things turned out — everything is easier when the weather is on our side,” said Kristbjörn Róbert Sigurjónsson, known as Bobbi, one of the event organizers. “As spring arrived rather quickly in the days leading up to the race, the 50 km route consisted of two 25 km loops. That said, the track conditions were excellent, with mostly hard-packed old snow creating a solid and fast course.”
Around 460 participants registered for the 12.5 km, 25 km, and 50 km races, with about 270 competing in the 50 km distance.
