Tartu Maraton 2026: Estonia’s Worldloppet Classic Returns on full original course

“The race course has been under close attention in recent weeks, as limited snowfall has allowed less course grooming than usual. The snow cover is thinnest on the Palu–Elva section, which is why I personally inspected this part of the course again over the weekend. The snowfall in recent days has been helpful, and additional snow is forecast for the end of marathon week. The course master was also on site this morning, and we can confirm that all marathon distances can be organised on the original course,” explains Race Director Indrek Kelk.

The 52nd edition of Tartu Maraton 2026 will welcome up to 5,000 skiers from 30 nations to Estonia on 14–15 February, once again confirming its place as one of the cornerstone events of the Worldloppet circuit. For Worldloppet Passport holders, Tartu is not only a historic race between Otepää and Elva — it is an opportunity to collect valuable stamps and share the unique atmosphere of one of Europe’s most traditional long-distance ski marathons.

The weekend program offers racing for all levels. On Sunday, the legendary 63 km classic (CT) from Otepää to Elva headlines the event, alongside the 31 km classic (CT) from Arula to Elva. Saturday features the 31 km freestyle (FT), vintage race and team relay, as well as children’s races in Tartu. For Worldloppet skiers aiming for their next milestone, the 63 km distance awards a Gold stamp, while all 31 km races provide a Silver stamp.

Track Conditions & Weather Forecas

Current conditions on the Tartu Maraton 2026 course are stable and fully skiable. The marathon track is prepared along its entire length, with classic tracks set on both sides and the freestyle lane in good condition, although extra attention is required in certain sections. Snow coverage is generally stronger from Otepää to Palu, becoming thinner towards the finish in Elva.

After several weeks of cold temperatures but limited snowfall, organizers are using lighter grooming techniques to preserve the snow base. No additional grooming is planned before the next snowfall, and snow transport will be used if needed on thinner sections. The good news for race participants: approximately 10 cm of fresh snow is forecast for Friday and Saturday, which — combined with current temperatures — would allow for the preparation of an excellent classic track for race days.
