Birkebeinerrennet 2027: A lighter backpack for the legendary Norwegian mountain crossing
One of the most distinctive traditions in Worldloppet is getting a little lighter in 2027. When skiers line up for Birkebeinerrennet on 20 March 2027, the mandatory backpack will weigh at least 2 kg instead of the previous 3.5 kg.

New for 2027: mandatory backpack reduced to 2 kg
Participants in Birkebeinerrennet have long crossed the Norwegian mountains carrying a backpack, symbolizing the historic journey of the Birkebeiner warriors who carried the young Prince Håkon Håkonsson to safety in 1206.
From 2027, the minimum required weight will be reduced from 3.5 kg to 2 kg. The lighter requirement reflects the development of modern clothing and equipment, while skiers must still carry the prescribed safety gear for changing mountain conditions.
The backpack therefore becomes lighter, but one of Birken’s most recognizable traditions remains.

53 kilometers across the Norwegian mountains
The main Birkebeinerrennet takes place on Saturday, 20 March 2027, following its traditional 53 km route from Rena to the Birkebeineren Ski Stadium in Lillehammer.
Skiers looking for alternatives can also choose the 53 km SkøyteBirken in free technique on Friday or the scenic 28 km HalvBirken on Saturday.
Why not stay a little longer?
For international Worldloppet skiers, race weekend also offers a great opportunity to extend the trip.
With Easter week following directly after Birken, staying a few extra days in the region means combining the race with a traditional Norwegian cross-country skiing holiday.
A particularly attractive option is Sjusjøen, known for its extensive trail network and cabin culture. After race day, skiers can enjoy relaxed touring, spring sunshine and the classic Norwegian Easter atmosphere.

A historic challenge – now 1.5 kg lighter
The history, mountain scenery and challenge of Birkebeinerrennet remain unchanged for 2027. But with the reduced backpack requirement, the journey from Rena to Lillehammer will be a little lighter.
And for those who stay longer, the finish line does not have to be the end of the Norwegian adventure.
