An Engadin Skimarathon for the history books
On Sunday we are going to see a record starting field & world elite skiers from Norway, Sweden, France, Russia and Switzerland at the 50th Engadin Skimarathon. Among them the leaders of the FIS Worldloppet Cup 2018 since this is going to be the FINAL STAGE!
Strong international starting field
With Roman Furger the only skier who has won the Engadin Skimarathon for 2 times is going to be at the start. Together with him the winner form 2015, Ilia Chernousov (RUS) & from 2014, Norwegian Worldchampion Anders Gloersen are the favourites for this anniversary. Also the leading positions of the FIS Worldloppet CUP 2018 are waiting for the last chance to collect some points. Specially Ivan Perrillat-Boiteux & his team mate Gerard Agnellet are going to fight very hard: Only 15 points are separating the leader Perrillat & second Agnellet (both France, both Team Haute Savoie Nordic). So one of them is going to be the FIS Worldloppet Cup Champion 2018, who, we will see on Sunday! Also last years Champion, Candide Pralong (SUI, Jobstation Rossignol) is going to return to the cup after competing in Worldcup & at the Olympics this season.
14 point between 1st & 2nd woman before the final stage
Also the ladie’s starting field is very strong: Mari Eide from Norway is going to try to repeat her victory from last year. But it won’t be easy. Two ladie’s are going to fight as hard as they can for the podium positions: Aurelie Dabudyk (FRA, Haute Savoie Nordic) & Maria Gräfnings (SWE, SAS pro Team). Dabudyk, who won the FIS Worldloppet Cup both last two seasons, again is starting in the red bib at the final stage. But Maria is missing only 14 points to make her dream finally become true & and become FIS Worldloppet Cup Champion. Maria’s team mate, Rahel Imoberdorf (SUI), just won the Frauenlauf last weekend (Engadin women’s race), so also she counts to the favourites. Just like Riita Liisa Roponen from Finland, who won the Engadiner in 2013 & 2014.
The tracks from Maloja to S-chanf are presented in excellent conditions and since months, thousands of skiers are training here day by day on the original course.
Already in January the entries for the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Worldloppet race had to be closed. The maximum participants number of 14.200 was reached & the organizers had to limit the entries to ensure quality & safety. Currently 600 skiers are registered on a waiting list in case participants are prevented from starting.
