Fossavatnsgangan 2026 about to conclude the Worldloppet Winter
The Fossavatnsgangan 2026 returns this weekend as the grand finale of the Worldloppet season, bringing skiers to the remote Westfjords of Iceland for one of the sport’s most unique and historic challenges. Held in Ísafjörður since 1935, the race combines raw Arctic landscapes with a demanding course profile, making it a true bucket-list event for long-distance skiers. The 50km classic race, starting and finishing at Seljalandsdalur, once again headlines the weekend on Saturday, April 18, with athletes tackling climbs up to over 600 meters above sea level before long, fast descents back to the finish.

The event program stretches across several days, turning Fossavatnsgangan 2026 into a full ski festival. Activities begin midweek with night races over 35km and 70km, followed by freestyle and shorter classic races, including 25km and 12.5km distances, as well as popular children’s and family events. The main 50km race on Saturday remains the highlight, drawing both elite and recreational skiers to the start line, all sharing the same spectacular course through the mountains surrounding Ísafjörður . With its mix of competitive racing and community atmosphere, the event continues to embody the spirit of Worldloppet.

Current conditions in the Westfjords reflect the typical late-season Arctic character that defines Fossavatnsgangan. While spring has progressed across much of Europe, Iceland continues to offer reliable snow cover, with organizers once again preparing well-maintained tracks despite variable temperatures in the lead-up. As in previous years, conditions can change quickly, with the possibility of firm, fast morning tracks following overnight freezing, combined with wind exposure on the mountain sections—factors that often play a decisive role in race strategy.
“Snow came late but in ample amounts this time and the full 50 km track will be used. The spring is coming slowly, with temperatatures in the mountain around 0°C“, explains Gylfi Ólafsson, Fossavatnsgangan’s spokesman.
As athletes arrive in Ísafjörður, they can expect a race that rewards both endurance and adaptability. From the long opening climb to the decisive ascents of Fellsháls and Miðfellsháls, to the final flowing kilometers to the finish, Fossavatnsgangan offers a fitting and unforgettable conclusion to the Worldloppet season—where the wild beauty of Iceland meets the true challenge of long-distance skiing. And while the Worldloppet season is coming to an end, a last highlight awaits the participants of Fossavatnsgangan: The famous cake buffet and Fossa Party Night!
