Gatineau Loppet

3 questions, 3 answers, 3 reasons to travel to Canada’s Gatineau Loppet

Well, when talking about sports in Canada, of course, first thing to talk about is hockey. But not if you are a cross-country skier. Then you want to know about the Gatineau Loppet, the Canadian Worldloppet leg. On February 17th and 18th 2024 it is time for the next edition. But why would a skier book a flight and travel that far, to ski a race? We have 3 questions to Philippe Lebel, President of Gatineau Loppet to tell you!

Follow me skiing through the Gatineau Park and later attending a NHL game.

What are the unique features of your event that sets it apart from other cross-country ski races?

Philippe L.: First and foremost, it’s the people you meet who will turn your experience here in Canada into a magical and memorable one. Canadians are renowned for their warmth and hospitality. The volunteers you meet are eager to see you smile.

The second great feature of the Gatineau Loppet is that it’s the only event on the Worldloppet circuit to take place in an urban setting, less than 15 minutes from the country’s national capital, Ottawa, and downtown Gatineau. The event therefore takes place in the heart of a cross-border territory with a population of over 1.6 million. Once the skis are off, skiers are able to enjoy everything that the cities of Gatineau and Ottawa, as well as the bucolic municipality of Chelsea, have to offer. For instance, restaurants, cafés, museums, spas, the Rideau Canal (the longest maintained outdoor skating rink in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site), Parliament Hill, Ottawa Senators NHL games, and more.

Last but not least, the Gatineau Loppet is also famous for its trails in the renowned Gatineau Park.

Speaking of the Gatineau Park, the Gatineau Loppet is known for its magnificent natural setting. How does the region’s environment and landscapes contribute to the race’s appeal?

Philippe L.: All Gatineau Loppet events take place in Gatineau Park, just a stone’s throw from downtown Gatineau and Ottawa (Canada’s capital). Gatineau Park is a conservation park, nicknamed the green lung of the Outaouais region, covering over 361 square kilometers and home to a rich and unique biodiversity. It is the second most visited park in Canada and one of the region’s biggest tourist attractions. Gatineau Park also features one of the largest and best-groomed networks of cross-country ski trails in North America. It includes over 200 kilometers of groomed ski trails for classic and skate skiing, as well as backcountry trails. The park is part of the Canadian Shield, composed of Precambrian rocks formed over a billion years ago. Tectonic movements and glaciers shaped the rolling hills, flat terrain, bare rock and steep escarpments seen here today. Archaeological evidence indicates that the region was a bustling commercial hub some 6,000 years ago. We consider the right to use these trails an immense privilege.

What are the Gatineau Loppet’s future aspirations in terms of growth and improving the overall experience for participants and spectators?

Philippe L.: With it’s solidly experienced organization, the Gatineau Loppet has just embarked on the first year of its action plan, double-pushed towards the 50th anniversary of the Gatineau Loppet, to be celebrated in February 2028. This plan outlines the path that will guide the organization towards the growth that participants will soon notice. Participants will still be able to count on courses on the magnificent, high-quality trails of Gatineau Park, warm and welcoming volunteers, and local Quebec products at the finish line (maple taffy on snow, local beer…), but the organization also intends to continue adding little touches here and there that will enhance the skiers’ experience. A special emphasis will be placed on the experience of Worldloppet passport holders. Friends of the World, you’re welcome to take part in Canada’s Worldloppet race, the Gatineau Loppet!
