Emil Persson and Emilie Fleten on top of Vasaloppet 2023 results

After ten straight Norwegian men’s victories in the Vasaloppet, a Swedish victory finally came again in the 99th race, when Emil Persson won the sprint ahead of the Norwegians Andreas Nygaard and Kasper Stadaas. In the women’s class, there was a Norwegian victory when Emilie Fleten took her very first victory before second Silje Öyre Slind and third Ida Dahl.

Under nice winter conditions around minus five degrees in Berga By/Sälen the 99th Vasaloppet has started at 8.00am this morning. However, a light flurry of snow came just before the start, and up on the moors there was a thing layer of snow in the track. A “problem” that was solved by the first hundred elite skiers. In total about 15,800 participants made their way over the 90 km from Sälen to Mora today. Anton Elvseth and Astrid Öyre Slind were the first in Mångsbodarna, which means that they will both ride with number 100 in the historic 100th Vasaloppet on March 3, 2024. The starting places for the 100th Vasaloppet in 2024 were released on vasaloppet.se when the first skiers passed the Mångsbodarna.

In the men’s competition it was a high pace from the beginning on. Herman Paus and Tord Asle Gjerdalen took the lead over the first uphill and the following kilometers. With a high speed they stretched the field early in the race. Then kilometer by kilometer one by one fell of the leading group, until only less than 30 skiers had remained in Oxberg, with 28km left to the finish.

On the final 10 km it was only Emil Persson left with a group of another four skiers. Eventough Persson tried to break away, he had no luck and had to focus on the final sprint. The race was decided only on the final meter, when Persson’s toe crossed the finish line in Mora only centimeters before the one of last year’s winner, Andreas Nygaard from Norway. Also just some few centimeters back, another Norwegian claimed the 3rd podium position: Kasper Stadaas. Persson has won the Vasaloppet as first Swede after 10 years of Norwegian victories.

Last year’s winner Astrid Öyre Slind was first up to the Climb prize at the race’s highest point after three kilometers. Already there she was 22 seconds ahead of the second best lady. After her tenth place in the three-mile at the WC in Planica on Saturday, Astrid Öyre Slind had only slept two hours and at the passage in Risberg Emilie Fleten started to catch up. Before today’s race, Fleten had several podiums in big ski marathons, but no victory yet. Last year she finished third in the Vasaloppet. At the Bergspriset in Evertsberg, it was now Emilie Fleten who led by over two minutes, ahead of a tired Astrid Öyre Slind. Fleten’s lead at the next control in Oxberg already was three minutes, now on Astrid’s twin sister Silje Öyre Slind.

Fleten finished in 4.04.08 and won by two and a half minutes. Silje Öyre Slind came second and after that came Ida Dahl who moved up in terms of placement to another third place in the Vasaloppet. Emilie Fleten struggled to hold back tears of joy after finishing:

“Today was a roller coaster! It started with me falling on the start fence and then I thought it was over, but when I started to catch up to Astrid and then even managed to get away from her… and at the end I was so tired that I feared I would be caught again… It really feels like a victory for the whole Team Ramudden. I’m so grateful for them. They were there all the way along the race. This victory is for my team!”, Emilie Fleten, Vasaloppet winner 2023.
