Finlandia Hiihto’s tracks are prepared for the weekend
The coming weekend the Worldloppet skiers are spread over three different venues. In Germany, the 4th FIS Worldloppet Cup stage takes place, the König Ludwig Lauf, in Japan the Sapporo Int. Skimarathon and in Finland the Finlandia Hiihto stands on the program.
Novelties at Finlandia Hiihto
The week of Finlandia Ski Marathon events couldn’t get a better start: more than 1300 school kids from first until fourth grade enjoyed skiing in nice winter weather at Children’s Finlandia on Tuesday. Joy of skiing and participating together with classmates was visible. ”Can I go another loop” was often heard sentence.s
Finlandia Week will continue on Saturday, where something new will be done: The celebration of the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence added also a novelty to Finlandia Ski Marathon: 100 km classic race. So far 430 skiers are set to complete the ”double marathon”. It will be the first event to start as the skiers start their journey at 8 am.The classic 50 km races will start in three groups from 10:00 until 10:30. The 32 classic race starts at 11 and then all starts for Saturday are done. Traditionally the 50k classic has been the most favored distance among skiers and it remains to be so: almost 1600 entries are already in. Also Finlandia Ski Marathon legend Kari Varis is among participants. On Sunday the technique changes to free and there are 50km free starts in three groups, first one starting at 10. The 20km free skiers will start 11:20 altogether.
Proper tracks at the Finlandia
The conditions were winterish and sunny with good tracks for Children’s Finlandia. As it is Finlandia’s top priority to provide skiers with as perfect tracks as possible, snow conditions were good enough for 33 km loop. That means 50 km, for example, is 53 as additional 20 km loop is completed. 100 km, however, consist of three 33 km loops.
”Traditionally there has been quite a lot late entries in winters like this, so we are hoping to get at least 4000 skiers”, says secretary-general Tiina Hernesniemi.
The highlights of the race will be shown on Monday, 6th February, at 8:00 pm CET on Worldloppet-TV!
