Fossavatnsgangan 2025: Time for the Perfect Spring Finale for Skiers
While winter has already faded in most of Europe, Iceland still offers excellent cross-country skiing conditions. From April 9–12, the legendary Fossavatnsgangan in Ísafjörður will once again welcome skiers from around the world for the final Worldloppet race of the season. With breathtaking landscapes, well-prepared tracks, and a warm Icelandic atmosphere, this event promises an unforgettable skiing experience.
Great Snow Conditions and Stunning Scenery
Despite a slightly drier winter than usual, the race organizers are optimistic. The 12.5 km and 25 km tracks are already in top shape, and work is progressing on the 50 km course. “The forecast even predicts fresh snowfall in the coming days, so we’re hoping to deliver the full Fossavatnsgangan experience,” says track manager Hlynur Kristinsson. One of the event’s highlights is the Fossavatn Night Race (watch the Vlog about this race from 2024), where participants can glide through the mountains under the magical Icelandic evening sky.

A Tradition of 90 Years
First held in 1935, Fossavatnsgangan is deeply rooted in Iceland’s skiing history. More than just a race, it is a celebration of cross-country skiing and community spirit. The people of Ísafjörður take pride in making the event special for all participants. One of the most beloved traditions is the post-race cake buffet, where skiers can enjoy homemade treats prepared by the local skiing club. The celebrations continue on Saturday evening with a grand seafood feast and a lively dance party—a perfect way to end an incredible race weekend.

The Ultimate Season Finale
With race distances ranging from 12.5 km to the challenging 50 km classic, Fossavatnsgangan offers something for every skier. As the last major ski marathon of the season, it’s the ideal opportunity to enjoy one final adventure on snow, surrounded by Iceland’s breathtaking fjords and untouched nature.
