Kangaroo Hoppet 2021 cancelled! Virtual event as an alternative

That there won’t be an on-snow Kangaroo Hoppet for the most of us was clear already. International travel bans and restrictions made it almost impossible for international skiers to travel to Falls Creek and participate at this year’s Kangaroo Hoppet.

But now, after a meeting of the OC past week, the decision was made, not to proceed with the on snow event on 28th August 2021 at all.

“The combination of international and interstate travel bans with the uncertainty around the level of Victorian COVID restrictions that would apply over the next fortnight meant that we felt that we weren’t able to offer a safe event for our participants and volunteers in the alpine environment,” said Race Director Ben Derrick. “Not to overlook providing a high-quality event and the limits on participant numbers for events such as ours”.

Virtual Hoppet as an alternative event open to everybody

Already before this decision, the organizers have offered again the Kangaroo Hoppet Do it your way! A virtual event open to everybody around the world. Everyone who wants to be part of the Australian Worldloppet member in 2021, can register and ski, run, walk, roller ski, bike the distance at home. Diploma and a small price will be sent to the finishers.

With the virtual event already on offer for those unable to get to Falls Creek organizers are planning to offer an ‘open track’ style event from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 August for skiers that can make it up to Falls during Hoppet Week (victory-selfie on the Hoppet podium possible).

This virtual event is also part of the Virtual Racing League, organized by Worldloppet. All virtual events carried out by Worldloppet member races are collected under one league. Finish 7 events and become a Virtual Racer!
