Kangaroo Hoppet

Kangaroo Hoppet cancelled due to uncommonly warm weather

The Kangaroo Hoppet 2024 should have been taking place next weekend, on August 24th as second event of the new Worldloppet winter. And even though the skiing conditions in Falls Creek, the venue of Australia’s biggest xc-skiing race have been great throughout the season, weather has changed rapidly over the past days: Mild temperatures and rain. As the forecast is not promising at all – more rain predicted – the jury had to take the hard decision to cancel the Kangaroo Hoppet for the second time in a row:

“Despite the best efforts of the cross-country snow grooming team at Falls Creek and the imaginative course options dreamt up by the Race Committee, we have to let you know that the Jury has met and decided that the combination of rapidly deteriorating snow conditions on the course with the outlook for significant warm weather and quite a lot of rain over the next week means that the 2024 Hoppet shall be cancelled.”, says Allan Marsland from the OC.

The registration fee shall be refunded and the registered participants will receive an email with further information.

While there is still good skiing in sections of the Heathy Spur and Mt McKay/Pretty Valley areas at higher altitude around Falls Creek, snow conditions on the lower trails in Sun Valley, the Dam Wall, and along the Bogong High Plains Road are poor, means that it is not possible to host an event on the scale of the Kangaroo Hoppet.

Despite this bad news from Australia, the Worldloppet circuit is going to kick off now: The Ushuaialoppet in Argentina is going to take place this weekend. Also New Zealand’s member race, the Merino Muster will be hosted on 31st August. Until then Worldchampion and US skistar Jessie Diggins is enjoying the tracks of Merino Muster together with team mate Julia Kern.
