Kari Varis won also 50 km free
Kari Varis become a double champion as he claimed victory also in 50 km free technique race at Finlandia. It was his 8th victory at Finlandia. Previously he has took home the same double in 2008.
“I felt strong today. After yesterday, I was a bit scared if I have enough energy. In the end, it turned out to be the best free technique skiing what I have done here at Finlandia. I felt yesterday in my arms, but my legs were fresh. I am pleased with the day”, Varis says.
On Sunday it was a group skiing for long. In 38 km, Varis made an attack and Joachim Gustafsson was the only one who was able to follow. Gustafsson couldn’t follow longer than few kilometers, but finished second.
“I couldn’t keep up with Kari longer than few kilometers. I feel good about my placement as it is the best what I have gotten in Finlandia”, Gustafsson says.
Sini Alusniemi was in her own class in ladies 50 km. She stick to the men’s leading group until 38 km, and won the women’s event by nearly 15 minutes.
“It felt surprisingly good. At the moment I realized I was in the same group as Varis. Then I thought that my speed seems to be quite good”, Alusniemi says.
