König Ludwig Lauf

The German Oberammergau is the most popular cross country skiing destination in the Ammergauer Alps, located between Munich and Innsbruck. The main event in the respective winter sport calendar is the Worldloppet König Ludwig Lauf race, taking place annually on the first weekend of February.

Classic or free-style skiers compete either in the 25 kilometer (Worldloppet sivler status) or 50 kilometer race (Worldloppet gold status). This year’s World Championship for doctors and pharmacists is also held in conjunction with the 25 kilometer FT race, while the classic 50 kilometer race is also part of the xc-ski.de Skimarathon Cup, a cup launched by the news platform xc-ski.de, in order to crown Germany’s marathon skiing champion. It consists of the König Ludwig Lauf, the Kammlauf and the Skadi Loppet. Young skiers have the chance to partake in the five kilometer Mini Kini children’s race.

Since 45 years, thousands of ambitious elite and popular skiers from all over Europe have travelled to the Bavarian valley Graswangtal to compete in Germany’s largest marathon, which leads through the hunting grounds of King Ludwig II. From Ettal, participants are starting off towards the massive and impressive basilica of the Benediktinerabtei Ettal, passing it before vanishing in the endless winter wonderland of the valley surrounded by the Alps.

This year, for the first time, a free ski testing will be carried out the Thursday before the racing weekend. On Friday and Saturday, the hand out of the starting numbers will be conducted during the sports fair at the Ammergauer house.

The 44th König Ludwiglauf will once again attract a large amount of skiers, form all around the world, to enjoy the Worldloppet-atmosphere. All of those who want to be one of them should register on the König Ludwig Lauf’s homepage. Early birds can register until the 31st of October for a reduced entry fee.
