News from Japan: Sapporo in the post Olympic year

From July 23rd to August 8th 2021 the Olympic Games were taking place in Tokyo. The Worldloppet venue Sapporo – home of the Sapporo Skimarathon – was the host of the marathon and the power walking race. Unlike Japan’s biggest xc-ski event, the Olympic events were taking place in the city of Sapporo, which brought an impressive scenery to the athletes. One could see clearly, that the citizens of Sapporo are used to big sport events: The cheering crowd was excited and supportive for all athletes. At the moment, the Paralympic Games are taking place.

What about the Sapporo Skimarathon 2022?

Now Sapporo has to focus on winter time again: Only in a few months, the Sapporo Skimarathon should take place again after a one-year-break. Last season, the OC was forced to cancel the race due to the Covid restrictions. Instead, a virtual event was taking place: The Fun on Sapporo Virtual Race. With more than 700 participants the event was a great success.

But in 2022, the organizers want to bring the Sapporo Skimarathon back on snow again. Already now the preparations are fully in swing. “It won’t be easy. We are facing hardships under the ongoing pandemic, but we will do our best to meet the expectations of our international participants.”, was the quote in the latest press release.

Not only the Covid pandemic is a threat for the Sapporo Skimarathon 2022. The OC is also suffering from lacking snow over the past years. So they have to work on adapting the race course in order to make it safer for the participants and more easy to prepare it with less snow.

For now the plan is to hold a hybrid race in February 2022 – both a real race on snow and a virtual edition.
