Season Ender: Iceland’s Fossavatnsgangan
For the last time this season, the Worldloppet-family packs its bags and skies and travels to a race-venue somewhere on this globe. The season ender starts in Iceland’s Ísafjörður
The race-weekend already started yesterday with a masterclass and today afternoon with an elite skiers race. Fossavatnsgangan is Iceland’s largest ski event where different types of skiers get together, from children to their grandparents all coming together to celebrate cross-country skiing. This year we have about thousand skiers participating and a record number of Icelandic participants. Cross-country skiing has been growing fast in popularity in Island over the last couple of years, partly thanks to Fossavatnsgangan.
There are many great participants this year, among them Justina Kowalczyk from Poland and many known Icelanders. Also remarkable are the two exceptional groups of women that have been very active in the Icelandic cross counry world this season; one from Víking in Reykjavík and the Gullrillur from Ísafjörður. You can find a list of participants here: http://www.fossavatn.com/registrations/who-is-registered.asp.
The 25 km freestyle race (won by Justyna Kowalczyk), the Family fossavatnsgangan with 1 and 5 km and the mastersraces is already over. On Saturday we are awaiting a 10 km, 25 km and the legendary 50 km race. The award ceremony will as usually start right after the race with a grand cake buffet.
The weather conditions have been changing quite rapidly but to the better and at this moment the weather forecast for Saturday is 1°C, gentle breeze (4 m/s) and minor drizzle of rain.
So one last time: Keep on skiing!
