König Ludwig Lauf

The König Ludwig Lauf is back!

After two years of cancellation, the König Ludwig Lauf in Germany finally returned to the Worldloppet calendar today with its free technique events — and the comeback could not have been more successful. Around 1,300 skiers took part under nearly perfect winter conditions: temperatures around zero, sunshine, and a light snowfall overnight that left the tracks in excellent shape. Smiles, relief, and pure joy were visible everywhere along the course from Ettal to Oberammergau.

For many participants, today’s race was especially meaningful. Worldloppet skiers from all over the world were delighted to once again collect a Worldloppet Passport stamp in Germany. Tomorrow’s classic technique races are expected to welcome around 1,600 participants, and after the finish line, the Worldloppet family will also celebrate the achievement of new Worldloppet Masters.

Sportingly, the free technique races delivered strong performances. In the men’s race, Alexander Brandner (AUT) claimed victory, followed by Valentin Haag (GER) in second place and Jakob Milz (GER) in third. The women’s podium was topped by Anna-Maria Dietze (GER), with Carla Wohler (SUI) finishing second and Sigrid Mutscheller (GER) taking third place.

“It was a big relief when I went to the start area in Ettal this morning and I saw perfectly groomed tracks, happy and motivated skiers and busy organizers. I think everyone today is happy for König Ludwig Lauf to finally be back,” said Gunnar Zlöbl, Worldloppet Spokesperson.

While Germany celebrates its long-awaited return, the Worldloppet spirit continues elsewhere as well: this weekend, Worldloppet races are also taking place in Czechia at Jizerská 50 and in Japan at the Sapporo Skimarathon. Updates soon on this website.
