Torleif Syrstad and Emilie Fleten win Vasaloppet 2024
It were not the easiest conditions for the 100th anniversary edition of Vasaloppet. Warm, cloudy and even slightly raining at the start. So everyone of the 16.000 skiers knew, it will be a tough day between Sälen and Mora. The elite race was thrilling from the beginning on. Already on the first uphill Thomas Oedegaarden stretched the field. The major part of the 90 km it was a group of four skiers in the lead. About 20 km before the finish, Torleif Syrstad from Norway broke away and was never seen again by the chasers. With a time of 3:52:43 he won the 100th Vasaloppet. Almost 4 Minutes later Johan Hoel (NOR) and Sweden’s youngster Alvar Myhlback had to fight for the second place with Hoel winning. Myhlback with his 17 years is a sensation on his own as 3rd.
The ladies race also was a fas one. Emilie Fleten from Norway found a good group of men to ski with, while Magni Smedas (NOR) and Finlands Kati Roivas were skiing together. In the end Fleten won a gap of almost three minutes. Smedas defeated Roivas on the last kilometers.
