First Sapporo Ski Marathon: 8th March 1981, 30 km, 114 participants

1981 – The first Sapporo International Ski Marathon took place on the Sapporo Olympic Winter Games tracks with distances of 30km, 20km and 10km. The inspiration for the race came from the Holmenkollen Games in Norway. In the winter of 1981 a delegation from Sapporo visited Germany to study the organisation of popular ski races. To ensure that the new race started successfully, the organisers invited all the Worldloppet winners of the season to Japan at the organisers’. In 1982 the distance of the long race was extended to 42km and after three more years to 50 km.

The venue of the Sapporo International Ski Marathon is Shirahatayama Open Stadium which was established in 1990 as a full-fledged cross-country skiing stadium. There have been great achievements from the many international competitions taken place there. You can surely enjoy skiing through the abundant nature in the forest surrounding Shirahatayama Open Stadium with high quality snow along the course.

Interesting facts about Sapporo Ski Marathon
In 2020 the race celebrated its 40th anniversary.
In 2017 season a rental ski equipment service (for free technique) for foreign skiers opened. It’s available for foreign participants to apply for the rental service by sending the application form on the organizers website (see top of the page).
Places to visit
The Sapporo Snow Festival is one of the biggest winter events in Sapporo, it has a long history since 1950. Visitors can enjoy viewing spectacular snow statues in Odori Park located in the heart of Sapporo. Also, there will be two more sub-event venues.This magnificent event attracts about 2 million people from home and abroad. In 2023, the festival is taking place between February 4th and 11th.
