Worldloppet-Weather: March But No Spring
Yes, we’ve got March now, but spring hasn’t begun and winter isn’t quite over yet. But no worries: Although meteorologists count the beginning of spring on the 1st of March, really mild temperatures are not expected before the middle or end of March or even in April. The 20th of March is the real date when spring begins in the calendar. So until this date it is still winter and weather is according to this. In the next few days there is no spring in sight. A few fronts cross the Alps and bring a bit of snow, sunny phases are short and temperatures stay frosty, which is good for the races in Poland and Sweden at the weekend.
Let us talk about Bieg Piastow first: There won’t be a lot of sun – many clouds will cover the sky and it will be quite windy, especially until the afternoon, but it should stay dry most of the time. A few snowflakes are possible sometimes, but not a lot and on the whole it should be a dry day with temperatures around 2 degrees or so in the afternoon. But take care of the wind, gusts between 30 and 50 kilometres per hour are possible.
But there is also a race on Sunday and this is happening in Sweden. The annual 90 k Vasaloppet, held in northwestern Dalarna between the village of Sälen and town of Mora. It is the oldest, the longest, and the biggest cross-country ski race in the world – the king of marathonskiing. The weather in Sweden won’t be really friendly on Sunday: The sky is full of clouds, there will be no sun and temporarily it will also snow a bit – not much, but it may snow from time to time. Temperatures stay frosty throughout the day with peaks around -5 degrees in the afternoon. But this should not keep you away from skiing – finally we´ve got winter.
